License Drawing Information
Application Period for licenses ends July 31st.
About June 1st to July 1st the number of and type of licenses that will be released is available. The dates are not hard fast it is when the tribal council makes the decision on which animals will be available and how many of each license will be sold. You have until the end of May to submit a paper application without a check to the Game and fish department. If you are drawn a letter is sent advising you have won the lottery for that particular animal and that you are request to send a check for payment. You have 2 weeks to do so, any that don?t make the deadline payment date will be disqualified and the license payment letter will go out the next in line hunter.
Whitetail Deer are the most common hunts as far as seasonable availability. The area has a large population and like whitetail anywhere they have gotten bigger and as doing so smarter. Let?s focus on the smarter part first. With you veteran outfitter and guide you will be traveling through all private land.
Whitetail is usually hunted by waiting at key locations for them to cross. Some local areas are preserve and no hunting but your guide has access right up to the fence that separates the two, knows the area and when to be there. The country is rolling plains with some coulees and creek bottoms when hunting the whitetails deer. CRP and corn or other crops dot the land and provide a great food supply for the deer. Most is by setting up in specific areas. The average Whitetail buck taken is a 8-10 point of numerous scoring with an occasional 12 point taken, depends on when you pull the trigger or release the arrow. If you wish you can bring a tree stand or better yet a ground blind if you prefer hunting that way. Guiding is usually 1 guide to 2 or 4 hunters depending on the size of your group. Whitetail licenses are provided in a drawing that requires you to put in for it in by mid July.
Mule Deer are more in traditional Mule deer areas that are more open and dryer terrestrial ground. These are usually hunted spot and stalk in the areas where the mule deer are common. Sized range from 150-200 inch class deer. These also will be available after a decision by the Game, Fish and Parks to provide them.
Pronghorn Antelope hunting is chasing the speed goat of the plains. With 8 power eyesight, large lungs, nostrils that open to provide ram air and a body built for speed like a greyhound their biggest defense is running away. To get lucky with antelope you must dwell on the disadvantages, as desire to herd at nigh fall, not moving at night due to nigh blindness, and so on. Territorial as they are they will usually return to their territory when bumped in a day or so. In this dry area they must have a water source. Sometimes that means 1 water source for many antelope. A spot overlooking a water source can provide a vantage point and a good shot of every buck in the area. Your guide knows all of the tricks in the book. Bucks average between 10 and 14 inch depending on the spring moisture.
Elk Hunting is a 99.9% hunt. As the herd gets to large the decision to release some license comes down and they can be drawn. The elk are located in a enclosure of just under 3,000 acres or just under five 1 mile pieces of ground. With over 10 miles of fence line it is probably more area than you can hunt in a day. Don?t this this is a easy hunt, the elk can disappear in this rugged area and not be seen for days. Once spooked long shots are the rule so plan on being sighted in for dead on at 200 yards and know from practice where your rifle shoots at 300 yards. Bring a range finder on this hunt, distance can be a tricky estimate in this country. There are both bull hunts and Cow elk hunts when the licenses are released for the lottery.
Merriam?s Turkey Hunting is a spring and fall event with Toms taken in the spring and any turkey taken in the fall. The weapon can be shotgun or with archery equipment. Your guide has pre-scouted the area and located the roosting and feeding area and with full camouflage you will be set half way between the two and wait for the turkey?s arrival. Coyotes are an enemy of game birds and animals and can be shot on sight. The guide will provide the calling but if you wish to please let him know and he will let you or if coordinated enough you can call as two separate turkeys to provide the idea of more turkeys in the area.
Buffalo Hunting is a hunt of the Indian ancestors and plainsman. It is a hunt that most people feel they are hunting a docile Black Angus cow. It could be no farther from the truth. These buffalo are wild, unfenced animals with xxxx pounds plus that can resemble a Mack truck when angered. Seldom do people see an angered buffalo because with his size nothing else challenges him except man. Things like shooting one of herd bulls cows can quickly throw him into a fury once he licks the blod of the cow that was shot. In other cases they may look at the cow and walk away taking the whole herd with him.
A charge is not out of the question, and neither is shooting one then backing away out of the buffalos range and waiting for the other buffalo to walk off. By far the best fix is to make the first shot in the head so you have a good target area, If you want the meat it gets a bit more difficult in that you want to shoot where the neck bone meets the skull. On a buffalo it is 4 inches horizontally from the eye. If you would rather shoot the buffalo at a longer range then a 200 yard shot in the lungs behind the sholder will do. Seldom doe even a magnum caliber bullet ever exit the buffalo on this shot. A 150 grain 7mm Mage shot behind the buffalos shoulder can be found under the skin on the opposite side but usually doesn?t get that far unless it misses ribs on both sides.
My recommend is to shoot the biggest rifle with the most knock down power you can stand behind, and make that first shot count. Remember you cannot over kill a buffalo and since you don?t eat the lungs anyway I recommend that you backup shoot also shot at the same time. You will never have a better shot at the target then you do with the first shot. A vehicle in the vicinity is a good safety device so you have a place to go if there is a charge. Buffalo have been known to dent up a truck badly but you are safe inside even if they roll the truck over. Remember make that first shot a good one and two backup shooters is not out of the question, safety first. These are not Black Angus cattle.
Predator hunting and calling on the plains and the coulees is a great time. Coyotes are numerous and if you finish your hunt early it is a good way to absorb a day and enjoy the wildlife. The guide is a excellent caller and is always tuned to where the coyotes are in a overpopulation zone.
Prairie Dog shooting is allowed during most years. Prairie dogs are an important part of the eco system and a valuable for source for hawks, eagles, coyotes, fox?s and other carnivores that rely on the chance that there is 1 more dumb prairie dog left for dinner each day. There are times when they are not to be hunted, but very seldom.
